Dimmable CFL
A few tips will help maximize the performance of your MaxLite or EarthTronics dimmable CFL's.
First, maximize
 the life of your dimmable CFL's by starting your bulbs at full wattage, not at a dimmed percentage of the maximum light output. The compounds that are added inside the bulb are what actually creates the light output. The atoms within the compounds are excited by the electrical charge. Allowing the bulbs to start with a full voltage before dimming them is like allowing your thoroughbred horse to warm up before it performs on the track. It will help to maximize its performance.
Second, dimmers can dim an incandescent from 100%-0% of the total light output smoothly and continuously. Most dimmable CFLs can only dim to somewhere between 10% and 20% of maximum light output. Dimming any light bulb by 25% consumes roughly 20% less energy than using it at full brightness.
Third, know that the range of your dimmer will differ on a fluorescent bulb verses an incandescent. An incandescent allows the dimmer switch to slide, or rotate, the full range of the device. The fluorescent bulb requires a higher, consistant voltage range to maintain the arc in the bulb. Therefore, you may only experience half of the movement of the full range of the switch while still achieving the dimming range needed. If the minimum voltage necessary to maintain the arc is surpassed, then you may see either flickering or an instant extinguishing of the bulb.
Fourth, as incandescent bulbs dim, the color of the bulbs get "warmer", that is, the correlated color temperature - (CCT) drops. As CFLs dim, their color temperature remains constant. Fifth, you should never utilize a standard CFL bulb in a dimming circuit. The electronics encased in the ballast of a standard CFL are not designed for such a purpose. Putting a standard CFL in this application will drastically shorten the bulbs' life. ONLY CFL bulbs designated as dimmable should be used in a dimming circuit.
