New office buildings & major retrofits all across the U.S. are now using T8 or T5 fluorescent systems – many are indirect and smaller than what they were using before. New (and retrofit) industrial facilities are trying T5 High Output fluorescent lamp systems to replace standard Metal Halide.
More efficient use of energy consumption, for lighting purposes specifically, are addressed in an industry standard commonly referred to as ASHRAE. The specific name of the standard is ASHRAE / IESNA Standard 90.1 and it institutes power density limits for lighting (Watts per square foot) primarily for commercial and industrial buildings. Credits are given for using lighting controls in the early versions, while it becomes mandatory in later versions of 90.1. This standard is used as a basis for state energy codes, and many states have adopted earlier or the most recent version. T5 and T8 fluorescent light bulbs today offer a wide range of color temperature options.
